Leaving Cert Engineering

Students who have excelled in Materials Technology subjects at Junior Cert are likely to find this subject of interest to them. Students get a good grasp of all areas of engineering and can be beneficial for students who wish to do Technical or Construction related subjects at Third Level.

Engineering focuses generally on mechanical engineering, it is made up of a practical exam, a student project and a final examination. This is a practical subject with workshops and bench work which make it a very labour-intensive. Students must have a good knowledge of health and safety, technology, an in-depth study of metals and plastics, and manufacturing processes.

Engineering is far more popular with boys than girls as is reflected in the statistics below.

Statistics

In 2011 a total of 3860 students took Engineering at Leaving Cert.151 girls took Engineering at Leaving Certificate at higher level while 3709 boys did Engineering at Higher Level in 2010.

• 32.7% of students got a C
• 20.1 % of students got a D
• 3.6% of students failed
